Background of the Study
The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is rich in oil resources but has been marred by decades of environmental degradation and social unrest due to unsustainable oil exploration practices. Oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation have caused significant damage to local ecosystems and the livelihoods of indigenous communities. In response to these challenges, community engagement in oil exploration activities has become a focal point for sustainable development in the region. Engaging local communities in decision-making processes, environmental management, and the distribution of benefits can help mitigate the negative impacts of oil exploration and ensure that the needs and rights of affected communities are addressed.
This study aims to evaluate the role of community engagement in promoting sustainable oil exploration practices in the Niger Delta. It will examine how local communities are involved in oil exploration activities and assess the outcomes of such engagement on both environmental sustainability and social development.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant oil reserves in the Niger Delta, the region has remained economically underdeveloped, with high levels of poverty, unemployment, and environmental destruction. While some oil companies have adopted community engagement strategies, these efforts have often been superficial and ineffective due to poor communication, corruption, and the lack of genuine collaboration between oil companies and local communities (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2024). This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of community engagement strategies in fostering sustainable oil exploration and improving the socio-economic conditions of the Niger Delta region.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of community engagement in promoting sustainable oil exploration practices in the Niger Delta.
To evaluate the impact of community engagement on environmental sustainability and local development in the Niger Delta.
To identify the challenges and opportunities for improving community engagement in sustainable oil exploration practices.
